While Marco Island may be said to be an island of excess and luxury, it is a gorgeous place in nature. Real estate has taken over the island. If one goes to the south part of the island, once can see how it was probably 40 years ago. These are real beach homes on stilts, not the oversize villas of today. Then the whole coastline has one after another of gated communities. So many places on this island. But I guess with 275 million people, there are a lot of well-off people here.
On Marco we saw an Bald Eagle on a nest. The people we met were of course, Canadians from Perth Ontario!!
We arrived in the morning and tried for the Burrowing Owls and there are burrows everywhere. Barbr spotted the first Burrowing Owl and then we saw another one.
We took lots of photos of the owls and they are so tiny and so interesting.
From here we went on to Tigertale Beach and saw many different shorebirds. We have id' several and the photos are included here. We have an early start time tomorrow am and must hit the sack soon- Ruddy Turnstone and Sanderling photo included here.
We had a picnic lunch on the beach today and while it was hot, it was pleasant and there was an ocean breeze. The selfie today was taken there. Just in case anyone is wondering if I am wearing the same t-shirt everyday....I took four black T-shirts to wear on the trip as next week in Trinidad, instructions were that clothes should be subdued and not bright.
We tried for the Mangrove Cuckoo but no luck!
From Marco Island we traveled to Imokalee which is in interior Florida and a real farming community with lots of migrant workers and lots of Native Americans. It is pretty with working farms and ranches and so very different from the rest of Florida. We are staying here as we are going further inland to have a tour at the water treatment and storage areas around Clewiston, south of the largest lake in South Florida.
We tried to bird around residential Amokalee but did not see many birds. Likely there are Barn Owls around but we have not seen any yet. Colleen and I had a great rib supper at Rib City Grill and Barbr had a roast beef supper. We all have leftovers for tomorrow. We are excited for tomorrow.
Oh did I say it was perfect weather today! Just gorgeous here.
Barbs & Colleen
