Jan 18 - A very brief sighting of a Red-cockaded Woodpecker

Last evening Barbr bought a new T-shirt at Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda and she wore it today.  On the back it has a wonderful beach cabin design and says "It is never to late to start living the dream" and the T-shirt is a sunny yellow.  We think we are doing this each day.

This Limpkin greeted us at the cattle gate.

We drove to the John Babcock and Cecil Webb State Preserve just south of Punta Gorda this morning.  This is a huge drylands with mostly Slash Pine clusters and this is where the Red-cockaded woodpeckers are found.  It is too early for them to be nesting, another month at least so at this time they are just solo.  The one we saw was with a bunch of warblers, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, some Eastern Bluebirds along with the tiny Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers.

The Red-cockaded was was spotted high in the pine tree and from our angle and Barbr's best and only quick photo of the bird shows no black on the head but it did have some black on the head.

This is the only one we saw and we spent the rest of the afternoon looking for the bird.  We will still have several other opportunities for the Red-cockaded.  It was a hot day and we took several off-road trails in the cluster with the white marked trees which have the bolt holes or nest holes made by the Red-cockaded.  We really tried to find this bird it was an long effort.  We left around 3 pm to return to Port Charlotte with several stops (drug store, clothing store and dollar store, etc).

We made a stop at the Punta Gorda Wildlife Preserve and saw a Gopher Tortoise taking in the warm sunshine. This was another lovely new birding place with a huge raised boardwalk but it was lacking in signage.

This place had a wonderful bird blind with tons of feeders and only two chubby Mourning Doves.  We sat there for about 10 minutes with no birds coming in.  Maybe this place is busy in the morning.   This was the venue for our selfie today.  We are still smiling from our daily adventures!

We had a good supper at a restaurant next door to the hotel and now we are chilling out and listening to the best reality TV going this week, CNN which has been focused on the Obama/Trump transition.  Actually we are getting pretty good at solving the problems of society here, maybe Trump could appoint us three to the Department of Common Sense Portfolio!
